There is so much information about nutrition and dieting, and it is no wonder that most of us stay confused on what to and not to eat. In the 80s it was fat-free foods that made a surge. Diets with high carbs lead the way to an increase in diabetes in the 90s. In the 90s and early 2000s we had a surge to have a carbohydrate free diet. This worked well for most diabetics and many who were pre-diabetic. The problem was that we still did not get the nutritional elements like omega fats and the benefits of foods like legumes.

On todays radio program “Body Talk” on AM 1070 KWEL, I spoke of a few books to read for current thoughts on foods and how to decrease the likeliness of “Diabesity,” which is a word that combines diabetes and obesity. So here are five books that I really like and why I like them.

Wheat Belly: Loose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Your Path Back to Health by William Davis, M.D. This book explains the history of wheat and how wheat has not only change in the past 50 years, but changed us, too. In this book are suggestions and rationale for eating.

The Blood Sugar Solution: The UltraHealthy Program for Losing Weight by Mark Hyman. This is a very informative book on the affects of sugar on your body.

Why We Get Fat and What to Do About by Gary Taubes. This is a fantastic read about the study of several ancient and recent populations that are obese in nature. He explains a new paradigm that we eat because our bodies are starving due to storing increasingly food energy in our fat cells. Further, that we have no energy to move faster or exercise because our energy is again being stored and not mobilized. Those of you who really want to have a mental battle with what you thought you knew to be correct should read this.

Change Your Brain Change Your Body: Use Your Brain to Get and Keep the Body You Have Always Wanted by Daniel G. Amen, M.D. This is a great book on ways to make your brain healthier and, therefore, make your body healthier. This physician has the facts to back up his ideas. He uses special imaging of the brain to support his premise.

The Belly Fat Cure Fast Track by Jorge Cruise. This sounds like a hoax but it is really a great way to prepare for loosing weight by organizing your food program. There are recipes and meal plans. This is the answer book to how to eat better to lose weight.

All of these books share the idea that 5-6 small meals keep your insulin levels down and, therefore, maintain energy usage and less energy storage. Each of the 3 main meals allow items like eggs, meat, vegetables, and water. The two snack meals are protein shakes, almonds, apples and other low glycemic foods. Again, the main thrust is keeping insulin at a low and increasing another hormone called glucagon. Glucagon is a hormone that causes fats to be released from the fat cells and sends them to the liver for transformation into glucose or glycogen, gluconeogenesis or glyconeogenesis, respectively.

Okay, let me know what you think. Do not hesitate to contact me here on this site. God bless you.

On Saturday afternoon, on my radio show Body Talk on KWEL AM 1070, I spoke of a list of alkaline and acidic foods. The idea is to make your body more alkaline, because a higher pH allows us to fight off infections and cancer much better. Remember, a pH above a 7.0 is considered alkaline while below is acidic. If you look at the chart below you can see that 5.0 is ten times more acidic than 6.0 and one hundred times more acidic than 7.0. The normal pH of human blood is 7.34 to 7.45. Urine is 6.0 and gastric juices found in the stomach are 1.0 to 2.4.

Our bodies have several ways to rid us of hydrogen ions (H+), which are the acid components. When we breathe, urinate, or vomit, we can change the pH to more alkaline levels. The easiest way to measure pH is using a pH strip to test the urine. Most pH strips come with a color scale that fully explains the level of acidity or alkalinity of the urine. Simple urinate on a part of the strip and read it.

I have a couple of PDFs that you can download, Food pH Rating Chart and Alkaline and Acidic Food Chart. These are off the internet and have references. There are so many books and sites. The book I just read was The Ultimate pH Solution, by Michelle Schoffro Cook. It is an easy read and is really interesting.

So, do some self-testing for acid levels and see if you feel better with a more alkaline diet. Please feel free to comment or get in touch with me.

Is “Calories Burned Greater Than Calories Consumed” The Right Philosophy In Losing Weight?

I was in a physician’s office a few weeks ago and heard a doctor say that in order to loose weight you need to take in less calories than you burn during the day. This sounds like a very true philosophy, but it is not. It is important to understand that what we eat, when we eat, and how we exercise greatly affects how our body burns calories.

When we eat a diet comprised of primarily carbohydrates, we cause an insulin elevation. When insulin is high, we tend to store our calories as fat. So, if we live a diet of fewer carbohydrates, we will store less of our calories as fats.

Let’s think about this. White bread, tortillas, potato products, sugar drinks, candies, and other simple carbohydrates all cause an insulin reaction which causes an increase in the storage of calories as fats. If you then eat a diet of proteins, some fats, vegetables, and some complex carbohydrates, you will store less calories as fats and more as complex glucose (glycogen) in the muscles and liver. Glycogen is a complex “rope” consisting of glucose, and it is used during the day when you increase your activities. It is the kindling to the fire and keeps the flame blazing under the larger logs. Remember that you cannot burn larger logs “fats” without a smaller igniting fire, “glucose”.

So in a shorter version of the stuff above, it takes less energy to digest sugars and they cause fat cells to increase in fatty storages. Eating proteins, fats, and complex carbohydrates takes more energy to digest and allows them to be stored more as glycogen (glucose rope). So calories in does not equal calories out.

There is so much more on this subject, and more will be coming. I just wanted to stir a bit of interest. Ask questions and I’ll get back with you.
